Some tips to prevent dust allergy

1) Carpeting makes dust control impossible. Although shag carpets are the worst type for the dust-sensitive person, all carpets trap dust. Therefore floors made from hardwood, tile, or linoleum floors are preferred. While treating carpets with some chemicals could eliminate some dust mite allergen, the most effective way is removing the carpet.

2) If possible do not keep more than one bed in a bedroom. Most importantly, encase box springs and mattress in a dust-proof or allergen-proof cover (zippered plastic). Always scrub bed springs outside the room.

3) Do not put animals with fur or feathers inside the room. People allergic to dust mites often are also allergic to cats, dogs, or other animals.

4) Sheets, blankets, and other bedclothes should be washed frequently in hot water. Lower temperatures will not kill dust mites.
