People whose asthma attacks are triggered by physical exertion may have to skip those workouts at the gym or take precautions to prevent their symptoms.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), exercise-induced asthma (EIA) produces wheezing, coughing, chest tightening and shortness of breath during or shortly after strenuous physical activity. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, approximately 20 million people have been diagnosed with asthma, and 9 million of these patients are children. Children are more likely to experience EIA symptoms and the condition is often seen among Olympic-quality athletes.
