This overuse has resulted in very dangerous resistance to superbugs that we've all read about in the news. You probably are aware now that infectious microorganisms and fungi that were once treatable have become much stronger and even deadly because they have mutated into hardy or resistant strains due to the use of antibiotics. However, what many people and even your own doctor may not be aware of is that antibiotic use also results in an overgrowth of yeast and fungus in the intestinal tract.

Eventually if this is not treated properly it can become systemic, meaning that it invades all systems of the body. This yeast or fungus overgrowth contributes to a lowering of the immune system where cancers and other pathogen overgrowths can develop. Patients looking for asthma relief would benefit by knowing that diseases like asthma and allergies are a result of yeast and fungus overgrowth or candida in the intestinal tract caused by frequent antibiotic use.

1. The symptoms of a yeast overgrowth problem can include:
2. Fatigue and foggy thinking.
3. Cravings for sugar or bread or any foods that contain yeast
4. Bloated abdomen, gas or abdominal pain.
5. Unable to lose weight
6. Vaginal, genital infection or itchy rashes.
7. A white coating on the tongue.
8. Sinus infections.
9. Loss of energy.

Other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and Chrohn's disease have been shown to be caused by frequent antibiotics use. In addition, studies have shown that antibiotics have also been linked to the development of allergies, hayfever and asthma in children. Medical associations in North America, the United Kingdom, and Australia are aware of this but surprisingly many people and their doctors do not seem to be educated in this regard. Despite the superbug problem, antibiotics still seem to be asked for by patients and prescribed too often by their doctors. Boosting the immune system by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise and adequate rest is often all that is needed to fight or prevent infections. If antibiotics are necessary, many patients are not made aware of the risks and more importantly what to do about them.

When you take antibiotics, one of the side effects is that they kill the good bacteria or lactobacillus living in your intestinal tract. When this happens the candida yeast or fungus is allowed to grow unchecked and causes an imbalance. The result of this imbalance can be allergy and asthma symptoms and other diseases. To their credit some doctors advise their patients to take yogurt and lactobacillus supplements immediately after a course of antibiotics to re-implant the bacteria and prevent yeast and fungus from taking over. If this is not done each time antibiotics are prescribed, then an overgrowth will result.

Antibiotics such as penicillin are also known to have severe side-effects like anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction resulting in an asthma attack and eventually heart failure and death. Medical reports show that other antibiotics such as amoxycillin, ampicillin, cephalosporins, erythromycin tetracycline and spiramycin are known to cause asthma. Avoiding antibiotics whenever possible is important and but if you do have to take them be sure to take a good quality lactobacillus supplement and yogurt to restore your body's balance of good bacteria.

Susan Millar is a former asthma and allergy sufferer. Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory disease which attacks the respiratory system that is indicated by the tightening of the airway. People suffering from this condition often feel that his/her airway is inflamed and filled with mucus. Common asthma symptoms include wheezing, coughing during nighttime, shortness of breath, as well as pressure, pain, and the feeling of tightness around the chest area. However, the severity of these symptoms varies from time to time, one sufferer to another.

They can be mild now, but they can get more severe in the future. Asthma attacks can be caused by genetic and external factors. Some people suffer an attack when they are in cold climates, while some others might get it after doing heavy workouts or sports. Mild asthma usually lasts for a while and subsides within a matter of minutes. On the other hand, more severe condition might need serious treatment.

If not treated immediately, early symptoms can lead to acute asthma. Therefore it is essential to have the knowledge about asthma symptoms in order to prevent an attack from happening. Early symptoms among others are frequent coughing during nighttime, wheezing and coughing especially after doing exercises, trouble sleeping, and shortness of breath. Other warning signs include the feeling of tiredness or weakness even when you are doing light activities, and decreased lung function (which can be checked using a peak flow meter). Common cold and allergy symptoms such as cough, headache, sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat also indicate that a person is prone to asthma.

Do not wait until too late to treat these early symptoms of asthma. Given that this condition cannot be cured, you need to learn how to prevent it from reoccurring too often. The very basic step of asthma symptom treatment is by controlling the environment. Healthy environment makes healthy people. You can prevent the accumulation of dust and other asthma-triggering agents by not keeping furry or feathery pets, keeping the humidity of the house low, replacing upholstery and carpets with non-fabric materials, and using air conditioner instead of fan.

You should also wash your bed sheets, pillow cases, and mattress pad using hot water at least once a week. Also consider replacing conventional bedding materials such as foam rubber, kapok, or down feathers with synthetic ones. Covering mattress, box springs, and pillows with dust-proof wrap will also effective to prevent dust from accumulating.

Asthma symptoms can lead to an acute asthma attack if left untreated. To avoid this from happening, learn more about asthma symptom treatment from our website.

The Gluten Allergy

There are so many great reasons to go gluten-free...this type of diet, which eliminates food products that contain gluten (including wheat, rye, spelt, kamut and barley), can clear up allergies, bloating, gastrointestinal disorders, and so much more.

Getting started with this lifestyle may require some degree of willpower (as well as an ongoing commitment to trying out new ways of cooking and baking). Luckily, grocery stores and health food emporiums are becoming very sensitive to the needs of these shoppers - they now provide a host of delicious substitute ingredients that will allow you to enjoy familiar foods, such as pizza, bread, and muffins. You no longer have to deprive yourself of good-tasting, satisfying food! Typical substitutions for grains containing gluten include rice flour, cornmeal, quinoa, and potato starches. When you're shopping for food, be sure to spend some time in the "health food" aisle - this is usually the best place to find prepared snacks, brown rice pastas, and other safe products.

Initially, these diets were prescribed to combat the effects of celiac disease...this immune disorder inhibits the proper digestion of glutens. Symptoms of celiac disease include rashes, fatigue, mood swings, gas, and pain in the stomach. Over time, even those who were not diagnosed with celiac disease began to recognize the stress and harm that gluten can cause in the human body. After all, wheat is one of the most common allergens in the modern diet - it can also be quite difficult to digest. These days, there are thousands of recipes and tips for everyone who wants to explore the possibilities of going gluten free...

Gluten isn't just found in typical flour products - it can lurk in some unexpected places. Bouillon cubes, soy sauces and hydrolyzed vegetable proteins are found in many foods, and all of these are likely to contain harmful glutens. Getting the hang of going gluten free is all about knowledge and education - you'll need to understand that even small amounts of gluten will cause a reaction and hinder your efforts to get healthy. As a rule of thumb, most canned soups, noodles, and boxes of cookies should be avoided. Even vinaigrettes, such as commercial salad dressings, can harbor the glutens you're trying so hard to stay away from. Sometimes, making your own meals from scratch is really the best and healthiest strategy. Even foods marked, "gluten-free" may be subject to cross-contamination from other foods. Therefore, how and where food is prepared is very important.

A diet that is rich in lean meats, fish, fruits and vegetables is often the ideal choice for a gluten-free diet. Potatoes, rice, and quinoa can provide extra carbohydrates for greater satiety. Cheeses and eggs are also great choices for mealtimes - neither of these products contains gluten. Seasonings should be free of vinegars and MSG (monosodium glutamate) - olive oil, lemon juice, and spices are safe to use and provide lots of options for sauces and salad dressings.

Dining out can be a little tricky - however, many popular chain restaurants, such as Chili's, offer a list of gluten-free entrees and side dishes you can use to make healthier choices. If you're eating out and you can't find a special, gluten-free menu, consider ordering a basic and burger and fries - minus the bun! Or choose a baked potato or rice for a side dish, along with a piece of grilled meat or fish.

Other popular restaurants that cater to gluten-free clients include: Subway (salads and dressings, not sandwiches) The Old Spaghetti Factory (gluten free pastas and sauces), and Boston Market (their rotisserie chicken and Southwest Santa Fe salads are safe choices for gluten-free diets). Don't be afraid to ask servers about gluten-free dishes - chances are, they've answered these questions before. If a server doesn't have the answer, they can probably check with the chef or restaurant manager to get an answer.

If you suffer from celiac disease, the ingestion of gluten is hampering your body's ability to absorb vital nutrients. If you're allergic to wheat or just intolerant to foods containing gluten, you may be weary of the tiredness, bloating and gastrointestinal distress they bring. Removing all glutens from your diet is really the only way to feel better - once you've started this important lifestyle change, you may notice you have less mental fogginess and more energy - you may also lose weight as you cut gluten-rich carbs out of your daily diet.

Melinda Knight-
Wife & mother of a family allergic to gluten, and former Catering Director at three of the largest hotels on the Las Vegas strip, where she planned menus and parties for thousands including the occasional 3,000 person wedding. While chronic bronchitis has often been associated with allergies and/or asthma, there are many other causes that can trigger a bronchial infection. Asthma as we know is a lung disease that is characterized by asthmatic events triggered by a variety of factors which cause a constriction of the bronchial tubes and air passages.

A chronic cough, wheezing, breathing difficulties and a tight chest have also been associated with the common smoker's cough. This is unfortunate as there are many environmental factors that can contribute to an infection and caused these types of symptoms.

One such environmental factor is dust. While dust is a common substance found everywhere, it's especially problematic for those of us who may have a compromised respiratory system. A less than ideal breathing tract is found in people suffering with asthma, many allergies and yes even smokers. What's been ignored in many cases however, is that exposure to chemicals can cause a sensitivity to environmental factors such as dust.

As it's recognized that dust is almost everywhere, it's important to try to limit exposure as much as possible. This sensitivity of the person with chronic bronchitis will determine the level of action that's needed to limit dust exposure. Someone who is extremely sensitive may need special air cleaning equipment installed in their home. While another who's sensitivity is not as pronounced may be able to live comfortably in a home simply on a regular cleaning schedule. Check out the link below for free report on tips to eliminate asthmatic and bronchial cough triggers in your home.

Exposure to chemical fumes and odors may compromise an otherwise healthy respiratory system. This in turn can lead to sensitivity to other environmental factors like dust, but also both primary and secondary tobacco smoke. While the validity of the effects of secondhand smoke are continue to be debated, it has been shown to be an important breathing factor for those with a compromised respiratory system. All of these factors can contribute to the chronic cough experienced by many asthma, allergy and bronchitis sufferers.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a well regarded medical facility, bronchitis and the resulting cough can also be caused from stomach acid irritating for food pipe or esophagus. This is better known as acid reflux disease.

Acid reflux can now be successfully treated with many medications.

If you think that someone you know may be suffering from a chronic cough caused by bronchitis or possibly asthma, it's important to understand the lifestyle implications this may involve. The primary focus however, should be to get an accurate diagnosis from a qualified respiratory or pulmonary medical professional.

Abigail Franks has done extensive research into Asthma,Allergies, and their triggers. Fortunately, there are many different medication options available to keep the symptoms under control. There are even some treatment options that try to lessen the severity of an allergy, or prevent them in the first place.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines do exactly what their name implies. When your body reacts to an allergen, which is basically seen as a threat to your body, it produces a chemical known as histamine. Histamines cause many, if not all, of the allergy symptoms you suffer from (sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, or runny nose). Anti-histamines can offer symptomatic relief. These medications come in the form of pills, nasal sprays, liquid forms, and eye drops. For most people over the counter and histamines are strong enough to provide and allergy remedy. Prescription antihistamines are available for those who have severe allergies that do not respond to over-the-counter treatment.

Decongestants

Many people who suffer from allergies get the pesky side effect of nasal congestion. Decongestants worked to clear the nasal passages. Decongestants coming in the form of pills, liquids, nasal sprays. Nasal decongestants should not be used for more than three days, as they can cause rebound congestion that is worse than the original congestion.

Allergy shots

An allergy specialist can help determine which allergens are causing you the most trouble. The most common way is via a skin allergy tests, where common allergens are injected directly under the skin's surface. The bigger the skin reaction, the worse the allergy is. Once you know which allergens to target, you may want to seek allergy shots for a more permanent treatment option. Allergy shots are usually given once a month or so, over 3 to 5 years. The idea behind allergy shots is that the body is slowly introduced to the allergen in increasing doses, so your body can build up a tolerance to the allergen.

Nichole Weathers is a freelance writer for many different companies, including Demand Studios and Break. Given that some people suffer from both, that leaves approximately 60 million Americans living with one or both of these afflictions.

The costs involved in treating these illnesses due to medicine, emergencies, hospital care and even loss of productivity in the workforce, are enormous. The healthcare and business losses come to approximately $18 billion per year in the United States.

Asthma and allergies are the main cause of absence in American schools. Children affected by these illnesses lose a combined annual total of 14 million school days.

Treatment for either illness involves an assortment of medicines. Asthmas sufferers generally use corticosteroid inhalers. These have become so common that it sometimes seems that everyone has one tucked away in a pocket, bag or drawer. Allergy sufferers take antihistamines, use corticosteroid sprays or, in the worst cases, immunotherapy desensitization injections, which must be taken on a regular basis for years.

What's the worst part of all this medication and treatment? It's a never-ending cycle. Treatment doesn't result in a cure, just a temporary fix that needs to be taken over and again. Medicines and injection treatments target symptoms. They can be successful in relieving these symptoms but they don't eliminate them. What about the heart of the cause? Isn't there something that can be done to fix the underlying problems that create the illnesses?

Chiropractic care is a distinctive way to provide relief from many illnesses, including asthma and allergies. Both conditions can react positively to chiropractic adjustments, which aim to regulate and stabilize the body's communications within itself. It takes away obstacles preventing the body from restoring itself. Once these obstacles have been removed, the body can work on rebuilding the hyper-sensitive areas that cause asthma and allergies, allowing it to reduce the affects of these conditions.

Nutrition is another valuable part of chiropractic care. Asthma and allergy sufferers need to keep themselves as healthy as possible, in order to enable their bodies in preventing the onset of asthma and allergy attacks. Your chiropractor can help you design a healthy, balanced diet, designed specifically to help you increase your body's immune system and metabolism, decrease discomfort caused by nutritional deficiencies and increase energy for physical exercise and day-to-day tasks.

There are many advantages to using chiropractic care in the treatment of asthmas and allergies. If you suffer from either or both of these illnesses, make an appointment with your chiropractor and get some natural, healthy relief.

A critical part of remaining safe and healthy is to be OSHA certified. After a susceptible person ingests a problem food, the immune system reacts with the release of histamines and other chemicals that trigger symptoms ranging from mild to severe.

Individuals who suffer allergic reactions to a particular food need to be especially cautious because a food allergy can trigger anaphylactic shock. This potentially life-threatening condition is characterized by difficulty breathing and a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

Milder symptoms such as itching, hives and swelling may also be experienced. However, there is no way to know whether a person with a food allergy is likely to have a mild or severe reaction after eating the problem food. Symptoms that begin as mild to moderate can quickly intensify, becoming much more severe. Therefore, the only effective treatment option for a food allergy is avoidance.

Avoidance involves the complete removal of harmful foods from the diet. It requires careful and constant consideration of packaged food ingredients as well as the cooking procedures and ingredients used at restaurants. The knowledge of alternate names related to a problem food is also essential.

Many individuals confuse food allergy with food intolerance, which is much more common and not as severe. Food intolerance involves the inability of the body to digest a food or food component, leading to symptoms of discomfort (e.g., stomach cramping) but that pose little danger. Food intolerance often allows the individual to eat small portions of a problem food without experiencing symptoms. With a food allergy, even a very small portion of a food allergen can cause an allergic reaction.

True food allergies occur in roughly 1 to 2 percent of adults and 3 to 8 percent of children, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. About 90 percent of all food allergies have been traced to the following foods:

1) Cow’s milk
2) Eggs
3) Peanuts
4) Tree nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts)
5) Wheat
6) Soybeans
7) Fish
8) Shellfish

A physician can help to determine which food is causing a patient’s allergic reaction by using tests such as the skin test or the double blind oral food challenge. After successfully identifying the culprit food, a person must remove the food entirely from their diet.

Children Can Develop Tolerance to Egg Allergy

Gradually exposing children with egg allergies to cooked egg could help them overcome the allergy, a new study reports.

In the Greek study, tiny amounts of cake containing heat-treated egg were feed to 94 children every day with the amount of cake gradually increased over six months. Eighty-seven children (90 percent) were able to eat the cake without allergy symptoms.

After six months, the children who did not display allergic reactions attempted to eat an egg not cooked to the same degree as the one in the cake. More than 95 percent experienced no reaction and were thought to have overcome the allergy.

The findings were expected to be published an upcoming issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

One in 17 children younger than age 3 has a food allergy, one of the most common being to hen eggs, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI). Many children outgrow the egg allergy by school age, but until then, the only effective management is eliminating all egg from their diet.

There is no cure for asthma

People with asthma experience intensified symptoms during an asthma attack, which occurs when exposure to allergens or other stimuli further inflame the airways, leading to an inability to expel trapped air from the lungs.

There is no cure for asthma. People with asthma have a chronic and variable, but controllable, condition. Patients can combine education, lung function measurement, avoidance techniques, lifestyle changes and appropriate medications to reduce the likelihood of experiencing symptoms. Such a comprehensive approach is known as asthma management.

The key goals in an asthma management plan include achieving the following:
• Minimal or nonexistent chronic symptoms
• Minimal or nonexistent flare-ups
• No restrictions on physical activity
• No missed work or school days due to asthma
• No emergency room visits or hospital room stays
• Minimal need to use short-acting inhaled beta-agonists
• Minimal or nonexistent side effects due to medications

Once an individual has been diagnosed with asthma, a physician will develop a specific asthma action plan to help the patient monitor the condition.

Asthma Attacks

Asthma attacks occur when an allergen (a substance the body perceives as a threat, triggering an allergic reaction) or irritant triggers an exaggerated response in a person with asthma (chronically sensitized or inflamed airways). Shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and wheezing (a whistling or high-pitched sound that results when breathing tubes are narrowed or obstructed) are among the symptoms that appear as the airways constrict and air becomes trapped in the lungs.

An asthma attack targets the body’s bronchial tubes, which bring oxygen to the lungs when a person inhales and remove carbon dioxide from the body when a person exhales. The diameter of these tubes narrows dramatically during an asthma attack due to a combination of factors, including:

1) Inflammation and swelling of the lining of the tube
2) Mucus buildup in the tube
3) Smooth-muscle tightening around the tube

As a result, the person is less able to move air into and out of the lungs. A person experiencing an asthma attack must immediately take prescribed medication such as an inhaled bronchodilator or an injection of epinephrine contained in an allergy kit. The longer an attack continues, the greater the risk of severe health consequences. People experiencing an asthma attack who do not have medication or have symptoms that are not relieved with medication should seek immediate emergency medical care. In rare cases, asthma attacks can be fatal.

Childhood Asthma, Allergies Traced to Womb

At least some of the biological risk for childhood asthma and allergies traces back to the womb, new research suggests.

Both the order of birth and even the way a baby is delivered have a significant impact on the long-term strength of a child's allergic defenses, scientists say.

The findings were recently presented during the American Thoracic Society's International Conference, in Toronto.

At the meeting, one team of scientists said it had evidence indicating that when a specific genetic marker for allergic and asthmatic development is present among a first-born child, it appears to raise the risk for allergic conditions as far as 10 years down the road. However, when the exact same marker is present in a family's second or third child, the gene seems to have exactly the opposite effect -- actually lowering such risk.

"This is the first time it has been demonstrated that birth order can affect the behavior of genes related to asthma and allergies, and that birth order can therefore affect the risk for developing one or the other," said study author Dr. Wilfried Karmaus, a professor in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is any inflammation that occurs when the skin’s surface comes directly into contact with an allergen (substances that trigger an exaggerated immune system response) or irritant. Though uncomfortable, the condition is usually not serious, although it should not be left untreated. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), contact dermatitis and eczema are responsible for over 7 million healthcare provider visits every year.

There are two types of contact dermatitis:

*
Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). Caused by a chemical or substance that is naturally irritating to the human skin (e.g., cosmetics, detergents, soaps, food, medication, metals, plants). The most common form of contact dermatitis, it usually resembles a burn.

*
Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Caused by an allergic reaction. The reaction varies from a mild irritation to redness and open sores.

Symptoms of contact dermatitis include a red, raised rash on the skin that often itches. Diagnosis of the condition is based the skin’s appearance and the patient’s history of exposure to allergens or irritants.

In a majority of cases, treatment of this condition involves identifying and avoiding allergen triggers that cause contact dermatitis. Effective self-care treatment remedies include:

*
Calamine lotion and cool oatmeal baths to relieve itching
*
Cold compresses
*
Washing with cool, soapy water immediately after exposure
*
Moisturizers to help restore the skin’s normal texture

If contact dermatitis occurs frequently, an allergy specialist should be seen to help identify the underlying cause or rule out allergies. The physician may prescribe antihistamines and corticosteroid medications to treat any inflammation.

Asthma Tests

Physicians use a variety of techniques to determine if a person has asthma, and to manage asthma treatment. These include tests that:

1) Measure how efficiently a patient’s lungs are working. This may include pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gas tests.

2) Identify allergens or other factors that might trigger asthma symptoms. Tests for this purpose may include bronchoprovocation tests and allergy skin tests. Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes that can lead to breathing problems.

3) Most asthma tests take place at a medical facility, but some – such as testing with a peak flow meter – can be performed by an individual at home. Experts agree that asthma tests present little or no risk of harm to the patient when done correctly.

4) The results of asthma tests may lead to a physician prescribing asthma medication and offering other preventative-care advice to individuals diagnosed with asthma. Once a person has been diagnosed with asthma, some tests will be repeated on a scheduled basis to monitor treatments.

About dust & dust mites and asthma

About dust & dust mites

Dust is an unavoidable part of life. Practically every activity in life generates dust. A human sitting at rest generates 100,000 dust particles per cubic foot of air every minute. The act of walking generates another 10 million particles per cubic foot of air every minute.

Household dust contains tiny particles of pollen, mold, fabric fibers, dander and dust mites. Dust can produce symptoms in individuals who are allergic to any of these allergens. However, dust mites are the source of most dust allergies.

Relatives of the spider, dust mites are microscopic arachnids one-third of a millimeter long that live indoors in household dust. Between 100 and 500 dust mites typically inhabit a single gram of dust, though in some cases the number can soar to 19,000.

Dust mites do not bite, spread disease or actually live on humans. However, dust mite feces contain a protein that is a powerful allergy trigger for many people. Each mite produces waste that is up to 200 times its body weight. Over time, the waste dries up and turns to powder, allowing it to become airborne. When an allergic person inhales the powder, an allergic reaction or asthma attack often follows. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, about 20 million Americans are allergic to dust mites. The allergen is one of the most common causes of year-round allergy and asthma symptoms.

Dust mites are tough to eliminate because they have pads at the ends of their legs that allow them to firmly attach to the fibers in carpeting, upholstery and mattresses. They are found in great quantities in the bedroom, where they feed off the dead skin cells that people constantly shed. The average adult sheds enough skin each day to feed one million dust mites.

House dust mite populations tend to be smaller in areas at higher elevations (e.g., Rocky Mountain states), mostly due to the lack of moisture in these regions. Exposure to low humidity levels or extreme temperatures will kill most dust mites.

Dust springs from almost every corner of life. Matter that disintegrates eventually reduces to the particles that end up in dust, which can then become airborne. Many common allergens find their way into household dust, including:

*
Molds
*
Cockroach debris
*
Dead dust mite debris
*
Tobacco smoke and its toxic byproducts
*
Fibers
*
Food particles
*
Pollens
*
Plant and insect parts
*
Hair, animal fur and feathers
*
Dried pet saliva or urine
*
Flakes of human skin and animal dander

Dust mites are microorganisms that thrive in settings where moisture and dust are abundant. In the United States, dust mite populations tend to peak in the warm, humid weather months. However, their fecal allergens remain present at high levels for months afterward, into early winter and beyond. Dust mites tend to congregate in the following areas:

*
Mattresses and box springs
*
Drapes and curtains
*
Bed sheets, comforters, canopies and ruffles
*
Clothing
*
Upholstered furniture

How to fight seasonal allergies?

Allergies don't have to take the wind out of your sails. Cutting back on activities you enjoy, such as exercise, will only leave you feeling worse. The trick is to find ways to minimize your contact with allergens while you pursue sports and hobbies.
Outdoor Activity

Even if you are allergic to pollens or molds, you can still enjoy being outside. Here are some tips for preventing symptoms:

* Remain indoors in the morning, when outdoor pollen levels are usually their highest. Be especially careful on windy days.
* Take your vacation during the time when the pollen is at its worst. Choose a location where your exposure will be minimal. The seashore, for example, may be good place to go if you have pollen allergies. The National Allergy Bureau provides information about pollen counts all over the country. For more information go to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Online.
* If you must work outdoors when pollen levels are high, wear a tightly fitting face mask designed to filter out pollen and keep it from reaching your nasal passages.
* Avoid spots where molds tend to be concentrated. For instance, let someone else mow the lawn and rake leaves.
* If you're going to stay at a cabin that has been closed up all winter, have someone air it out and clean it before you arrive.

Staying Fit And Symptom-Free

Exercise, which helps stimulate the cardiovascular system, is important for everyone. If you cut back on your exercise, you may end up gaining weight, feeling sluggish or getting the blues.

Smoking and Asthma

Smoking has been proven to be extremely harmful to the respiratory system. For people with asthma, tobacco smoke frequently tops the list of the most common triggers of an asthma attack. An asthmatic does not have to smoke to be affected, as even second-hand smoke can trigger asthma attacks or cause permanent harm to the airways, making it easier to have an asthma attack in the future.

Tobacco smoke is usually inhaled from a cigarette, cigar or pipe, and a number of chemicals in tobacco smoke have been proven to harm the lungs, as well as the arteries and other parts of the body. Asthmatic children are the most susceptible to tobacco smoke – particularly second-hand smoke. Children have smaller airways, so the airway constriction and mucus buildup that occurs after inhaling tobacco smoke can cause a severe asthma attack in a child. Children should avoid people or situations in which smoking is common.

Anyone with an asthmatic condition who smokes should immediately quit. Smoking can greatly complicate an asthmatic condition by damaging the lungs, even if it does not trigger an attack. In addition, many health risks have been linked to smoking, including cancer, respiratory infections and types of heart disease.

For a multitude of reasons, expectant mothers should not smoke. Low-birth weight and a host of medical problems have been linked to smoking. For instance, children born to mothers who smoked while pregnant are 10 times more likely to develop asthma.

Allergy Shots Are Effective Treatment for Symptoms

Immunotherapy allergy shots are helpful for those having allergic asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis or stinging insect allergies according to American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

Immunotherapy is a form of treatment that aims to decrease sensitivity to substances called allergens.

Patients who receive immunotherapy are injected with increasing amounts of an allergen until the target therapeutic dose is reached. These allergens include pollen, mold or animal dander which could trigger allergy symptoms when an allergic person is exposed to them.

Immunotherapy is an effort to build resistance to specific allergens. Relief of allergy symptoms can last long after completion of treatment and that immunotherapy helps prevent the development of new allergies and may prevent the progression of allergic rhinitis to asthma.

While immunotherapy is recommended for people with allergic asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis and stinging insect allergies, it's not recommended for those with food allergies, according to the AAAAI. The best option for people with food allergies is to avoid foods that pose a danger.

People should see a doctor about immunotherapy if they:

1) Have a clear relationship between asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and exposure to an allergen,
2) Have a poor response to allergy medication or avoidance measures,
3) Have a long duration of allergy symptoms (most of the year),
4) Are a child with rhinitis, because of the potential role of allergen immunotherapy in the progression of allergic disease.

Breakthrough Natural Asthma Treatment

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EEKbcxTDM0E/Ry8W3gJYwmI/AAAAAAAAAxQ/G4IXPfOXeGE/s320/asthma.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5129343643376206434" />
Breakthrough Natural Asthma Treatment

Don't believe there isn't a cure for asthma.

As an asthmatic, I was skeptical too, but what I discovered changed my life.
A DRUG-FREE, MEDICALLY-PROVEN, HOME TREATMENT PROGRAM DESIGNED BY AN EX-ASTHMATIC WHO CURED HER OWN ASTHMA.....Karon Beattie

"I had severe asthma, and took a huge amount of drugs and had to use my nebuliser four times a day. Although shag carpets are the worst type for the dust-sensitive person, all carpets trap dust. Therefore floors made from hardwood, tile, or linoleum floors are preferred. While treating carpets with some chemicals could eliminate some dust mite allergen, the most effective way is removing the carpet.

2) If possible do not keep more than one bed in a bedroom. Most importantly, encase box springs and mattress in a dust-proof or allergen-proof cover (zippered plastic). Always scrub bed springs outside the room.

3) Do not put animals with fur or feathers inside the room. People allergic to dust mites often are also allergic to cats, dogs, or other animals.

4) Sheets, blankets, and other bedclothes should be washed frequently in hot water. Lower temperatures will not kill dust mites.

New FDA approved drug for allergy

the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Xyzal (levocetirizine dihydrochloride, by UCB and Sanofi-Aventis) for treating nasal allergies and chronic hives in people 6 and older.

Based on clinical testing involving more than 2,000 people, the drug was found to significantly reduce symptoms of sneezing, itchy and runny nose, and itchy eyes. Also, the association between obesity and asthma severity is stronger in women than in men.

Although the actual reason for this association is not known it could be that severe asthma would normally lead to reduced physical activity which would tend to result in weight gain. Like any type of allergy, latex allergies arise when the immune system, which normally guards the body against foreign invaders (such as bacteria, viruses and toxins), reacts to an otherwise harmless substance, called an allergen.

In the case of latex allergies, a person can have a reaction to the chemical additives used in manufacturing the latex products or to proteins in the latex itself. When the immune system detects the allergen, the antibody immunoglobulin E (IgE) is produced, triggering the release of chemicals within the body. One such chemical is the inflammatory agent called histamine. Histamine is partly responsible for the redness, itching and swelling of an allergic reaction, and it produces such symptoms as hives, rashes, a runny nose, and watery, swollen eyes. More seriously, it can lead to breathing difficulties and a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis that can include a sudden drop in blood pressure, an increase in pulse, and tissue swelling.

Click here to read the whole article.

New Hope for Those With Insulin Allergies

Jan. 16 (iVillage Total Health) -- Medical advances have made insulin allergies rare, and recent innovations may help diabetic patients who still react to this medication, researchers report.

Belgian researchers at the University of Liege reviewed the medical literature on insulin allergies. They report that more than half of insulin-dependent patients 50 years ago suffered some type of allergic reaction to the hormonal drug.

Improvements that have made insulin allergies a thing of the past for most patients include better purification of insulin harvested from animals and the creation of synthetic human insulin. But they do need to take special precautions. Colds and flu are common asthma triggers. In fact, asthmatics often wheeze and experience tightness in the chest a day or so after catching a cold.
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung's airway tissues affecting an estimated 20 million Americans, including 9 million children. The lungs are inflamed even when symptoms are not present.

This inflammation makes the airways even more sensitive to allergens, which are substances your body mistakenly perceives to be a threat.
However, attacks can occur when the body overreacts to true threats - such as the viruses that cause colds and flu. During an attack, the airways tighten and fill with mucus. This traps air within the lungs, which the body cannot expel. The wheezing characteristic of an asthma attack is actually the body trying to force air out of the lungs. Viruses can also replicate themselves more quickly within inflamed lungs, leading to further inflammation and more severe asthma attacks.

To minimize the likelihood cold and flu season infections, take the following precautions:
• Obtain an annual flu shot
• Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer
• Do not share glasses, utensils and other items with those who are sick
Cold and flu viruses are spread through airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing and by touching surfaces contaminated with the germs. Asthmatics should try to avoid close contact with people who have colds or the flu. This may be difficult, especially if it is your spouse or young son or daughter.

At work, use disinfectant wipes or spray daily to clean the surfaces of commonly used items, such as telephone handsets and buttons, computer keyboards and other accessories, the copier and fax machine buttons, file cabinet draw handles, the office refrigerator door and light switches.

At school, pack a small package of disinfectant wipes in your child's backpack and instruct on him or her on how to wipe their hands and desktops during the day. Schools and day care centers and notorious germ incubators and many of them may already have sanitization measures in place. If your child has asthma, let school officials know so teachers can be alert to signs of an attack.

At home, the same regimen of disinfecting will help prevent the spread of viruses and germs, especially if a loved one or roommate already has a cold. Viruses and other germs can live on the surfaces of handrails, door handles and other objects for up to two hours. You become vulnerable to infection when you touch those surfaces and then rub your eyes, nose or mouth. Not everyone will get sick because we all have different immune systems and some are better able to fight off cold and flu bugs.
There is no way to completely prevent the occurrence of a cold. However, it is extremely important to avoid exposure to cold germs during the first few days after a person becomes infected, when the condition is particularly contagious.

If you have asthma and you catch the flu, your doctor may recommend antiviral medications. These drugs may lessen symptoms if taken within one to two days of exposure. Pay attention to your symptoms, drink lots of fluids and monitor your breathing. A peak flow monitor will tell you how well your lungs are functioning. Keep track of the results by taking readings at the same time each day, and call your doctor if there is a drop in your peak flow rate.

Finally, a good formula for staying healthy through the winter months includes eating a healthy, balanced diet. Fresh fruit and vegetables, regular exercise and a good night's sleep will help boost your immune system to fight off whatever the cold and flu season sends your way.

Whole grains and fish may protect children against asthma

A report published in the medical journal, Thorax indicates that children who take great quantity of whole grain products and fish seem to have a reduced risk of developing asthma. The usual symptoms are sneezing, coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing. Allergies and asthma could be triggered by a variety of allergens and irritants.

One way to minimize these problems, according to allergist, is to buy products that will help to reduce exposure to allergens and irritants. An estimated seven out of 10 people with asthma also suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease - commonly known as GERD.

GERD is a chronic condition that occurs when the valve that prevents stomach acid from moving back up the food pipe weakens or relaxes, causing a burning sensation in the chest. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, GERD affects an estimated 19 million Americans.

Researchers have studied the link between GERD and asthma for decades with many concluding the two conditions share common triggers. Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung's airway tissues affecting an estimated 20 million Americans. Among children, asthma is the leading cause of chronic illness.

Regardless of the link, people with both conditions should know the steps to help break the cycle. Doctors advise people with both conditions to avoid common triggers, including obesity and tobacco. In addition, asthmatics should:

* Reduce exposure to pollens, molds and animal dander
* Lead healthy lifestyles that include proper rest, good nutrition and regular exercise

GERD sufferers can help avoid acid reflux by:

* Taking prescription medications (such as proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers) as directed
* Eating smaller meals and avoiding meals at least four to six hours before bedtime
* Avoiding reclining or lying down for at least three hours after meals
* Wearing loose-fitting clothing to avoid putting pressure on the lower esophagus
* Knowing what foods trigger acid reflux (fatty, fried foods, acidic foods, caffeine, mints and carbonated drinks) and avoiding them

If you suffer from GERD or asthma, be sure to consult a physician for an examination and advice on steps you can take to ease your symptoms.

Regular exercise might help chidren fight hay fever

Researchers from GSF - National Research Center for Environment and Health in Neuherberg, Germany found that regular exercise might offer children some protection from the sniffs and sneezes of hay fever. Individuals with this allergy should avoid yard work, and stay indoors, with windows closed and the air conditioning running when pollen counts are high.

2) Molds - Often found indoors where the humidity is high, mold can easily become airborne and trigger cases of allergic rhinitis year-round. Running the air conditioner, using a dehumidifier and using a HEPA filter to remove airborne particles can help reduce exposure to mold.

3) Animal dander - Little bits of skin, feather or dried saliva from animals (usually cats and dogs) are responsible for many allergy symptoms. Individuals who are allergic to animal dander should remove pets from the home or, at least, the bedroom.

4) Dust mites - These microscopic insects live in the dust found indoors and often trigger allergy symptoms. Special coverings for the bed, box springs and pillows can help reduce exposure to dust mites.

5) Eggs - One of the most common types of food allergy, egg allergies are common in children, but usually are outgrown by adulthood. Allergic individuals should remove eggs, products containing eggs and products derived from eggs completely from the diet.

6) Seafood - This type of food allergy is characterized by an allergic reaction to ingested fish or shellfish. Anyone with this sort of allergy should avoid eating fish and shellfish as well as any food with fish or shellfish as an ingredient.

7) Latex - Allergies to the sap in rubber trees cause some people to be allergic to latex products (made from rubber tree sap), usually when skin-to-skin contact is made. People with this allergy should avoid contact with any latex product, including latex clothing, gloves or condoms.

8) Peanuts - This food allergy is triggered by peanuts or any product that uses peanuts as an ingredient. Reactions can include life-threatening anaphylactic shock. A person with peanut allergies should remove peanuts and any food containing peanuts from their diet.

9) Penicillin - This common type of drug allergy can cause a range of symptoms including anaphylactic shock. The drug penicillin is commonly used to treat infections. Anyone allergic to penicillin should avoid using the drug and wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace.

A new vaccine holds great promise to sufferers of allergy rhinitis (hay fever)

A study conducted by Johns Hopkins University's Asthma and Allergy Center on a new vaccine made by California-based Dynavax Technologies holds great promise for up to 40 million Americans suffer from hay fever.

A short course of immunotherapy that reduces allergic symptoms over an extended period of time will significantly improve the quality of life for many people. It is designed to help the body's immune system develop a tolerance for the allergenic substance, by exposing the body to tiny amounts of it over time.

However, immunotherapy is used only for a limited number of patients, because it is inconvenient and causes discomfort to patients. Also, the treatment requires weekly allergy shots for several months, followed by monthly ones for several years.
A recent research, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, supported the effectiveness of an oral form of immunotherapy using a rapidly dissolving grass allergen tablet called Grazax. The side effects of the treatment included throat irritation and itchiness and swelling in the mouth and ears. But according to the researchers there was no instances of serious allergic reaction to the therapy, which can sometimes happen with allergy shots.

Allergic rhinitis (hay fever ) leads to snoring and sleeping problems

In a study conducted by French researchers from Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris it was found that people with hay fever have more difficulty sleeping and more sleep disorders than those without allergies. Allergic rhinitis or hay fever is affecting about 20 to 50 percent of the population.

Previous research has indicated that allergies could lead to snoring and breathing problems during sleep, including sleep apnea (a disorder that causes breathing to be shallow or stop while sleeping). Hence allergic rhinitis being not only a nuisance by itself, it also result in a lower quality of life due to sleepiness, daytime fatigue, impaired memory, mood and sexuality, with a significantly increased consumption of alcohol and sedatives.

Dust mites the culprit in asthma attack!

The level of dust mites in the bedroom can be reduced by regularly replacing old mattresses and increasing the room's ventilation.

Dust mites which are microscopic arachnids live indoors in household dust. Dust mite feces contain a protein that is a powerful allergen for many people. After a certain length of time, the feces dry up and turns into powder, allowing it to become airborne. When an allergic person inhales the powder, an allergic reaction or asthma attack often follows.

There are several steps allergic individuals can take to reduce their household exposure to dust mites. These include thoroughly dusting and vacuuming the home at least once a week and using air conditioning and dehumidifiers to help reduce humidity.

Scientists at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research in Barcelona, Spain suggest that replacing mattresses and adding more ventilation can also help reduce the levels of the allergen.

Delaying solid foods to infants may prevent allergies

According to the researchers from the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI), feeding solid foods to infants before 6 months of age can increase the risk of allergies, while exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months may prevent the onset of allergic symptoms later in life.

This report reinforces the advice given by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization, which recommend exclusive breastfeeding for at least six months as optimal for infant and maternal health.

The timing after age 6 months at which specific foods should be introduced depends on a number of factors, including the individual infant's nutritional needs and risk for allergies. The researchers recommend that it is best to delay the introduction of hen's eggs, fish, peanuts and nuts until after the age of 12 months, or later in infants at high risk of allergy.

Are you allergic to milk?

One or more of the proteins found in cow’s milk or dairy products could cause what we call a "milk allergy" which is a potentially deadly allergic reaction. It is different from milk intolerance which is a sensitivity to the sugar found in milk products and does not involve the immune system. The common complaints include stomach upset and diarrhea. However symptoms of a milk allergy often include itchiness, rash, hives, stomach cramps, nausea and difficulty in breathing.

Sometimes the reaction can result in potentially life–threatening anaphylactic shock. The difficult part is that it is impossible to know whether a person with a milk allergy is likely to have mild or severe symptoms after consuming the allergens. Therefore people with milk allergies must try their best to avoid all foods containing milk proteins. Immediate medical attention must be sought in the case of accidental exposure.

Owing to the large number of products containing milk proteins, sensitive persons must becareful of what they eat and come into contact with. A good example is milk proteins that are found in a variety of substances, particularly dairy products such as butters and cheeses.

It is noteworthy that removing milk completely from the diet can cause certain dietary concerns because milk is a good source of several vitamins and minerals – particularly calcium. Hence it is a good idea to consult your doctor to see how you could properly supplement your diets with additional minerals and vitamins which are missing.

Which allergens present in homes and offices cause most frequent allergic reaction among sensitive people?

Many allergens present in an indoor environment such as the homes or offices can contribute to allergic reactions in sensitive people. These include the following:

1) dust mite droppings
2) mold
3) animal dander
4) cockroach debris
5) tobacco smoke and smoke from wood–burning stoves
6) household chemicals

Beside, all these can also aggravate respiratory problems when encountered indoors. Most indoor allergens are small particles that can easily become airborne and inhaled. People suffering from asthma could have a tough time because many types of indoor allergens can irritate their airways and cause an asthma attack.

Common food allergies you have to watch out for!

Food allergies range from very mild to life-threatening (anaphylactic reaction). The mildest symptoms are usually itchiness in the mouth and throat. Other mild to moderate symptoms include general itchiness, hives or rash, runny/itchy nose and eyes, recurrent earaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea

In the more serious anaphylactic reaction, the mouth, throat, and bronchial tubes swell to the extent that normal breathing is hampered. The person may wheeze or faint. Often there are generalized hives and/or swollen face. Immediate medical attention and treatment must be sought because this is life-threatening reaction!

Common food allergens:

1) Peanuts: This is often life-threatening. Call a doctor for any reactions to peanut products! (Peanuts can be a hidden ingredient in a number of foods.)
2) Soy: This can also be a hidden ingredient in a number of foods.
3) Fish and/or shellfish especially prawns and crabs: In some people, these reactions can be severe, ranging from extreme nausea to breathing
difficulty.
4) Berries
5) Peppers
6) Milk proteins: Less common than we think - most people are actually intolerant rather than allergic.
7) Wheat (and gluten), as well as some other grains (corn, rye)
8) Eggs

Please take note that many reactions have unknown cause!

<marquee><a href="http://www.web-source.net/216_color_chart.htm" onmouseover="dcc('This is the HTML color code. Allergies could complicate and handicap the lives of up to 50 million of the population including adults and children.
Allergies are results of an overactive reaction of our immune system to substances that usually cause no reaction in most normal individuals. These substances are known as allergens that can trigger sneezing, wheezing, coughing and itching.
Allergies are not only bothersome, but they could also link to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses such as sinusitis and the occasional life threatening asthma. However, with proper management and education, allergic diseases can be monitored and controlled. In fact, people with allergies and asthma can lead quite normal and productive lives.
The tendency to become allergic can also be an inherited characteristic. Several causative factors must be present for allergic sensitivity to be developed:
• The specific genes acquired from parents.
• The exposure to one or more allergens to which you have been made genetically sensitive.
• The extent and length of exposure.

Allergy-free soybean lines discovered

May 12 (HealthCentersOnline) - People with soy allergies may be able to safely eat more products containing soy, thanks to a new discovery.

Crop scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the USDA-Agricultural Research Service's Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis have isolated two Chinese soybean lines that grow without the primary protein linked to soy allergies in children and adults. Sometimes this is more frequent when one has a cold.

2) Coughing is another obvious symptom with mucus being discharge at times. The cough may last for more than a week.

3) Shortness of breath i.e. difficulty in breathing. It seems there is not enough air in the ambient. Frequency of this varies widely from one person to another.

4) The chest may feel “tight” especially during cold weather or during exercise. Chest tightness could be one of the signs that asthma condition is getting worse.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a breathing problem that makes it more difficult for you to get air in and out of your lungs. When you inhale, fresh air comes in through your nose and passes into your lungs through tiny tubes (called bronchi). When you exhale, air with carbon dioxide from your lungs is breathed out through the same tubes.

When you have asthma, the breathing tubes become sensitive to smoke, pollen, dust, air pollution, or other triggers. The breathing tubes may start to narrow and tighten, becoming inflamed and swollen after reacting with all these allergenic materials.

The end result is you find breathing difficult to a varying degree. People who are known to be allergic to pollen, pets, or dust have to be extra careful as they are at higher risk of developing asthma.

The diagnosis of this could be complicated especially for older people because the problem could be due to other organic problems such as lung disease or heart disease. Good examples of lung diseases that could cause similar problems are bronchitis and emphysema, particularly with smokers.

Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or anything else, increases your risk of developing asthma symptoms. If you smoke at home, other members of the family would have a greater chance of developing asthma.

Of course it is also possible for people with lung and heart diseases to be suffering from allergy and asthma as well.
